PRACTICE # 15: COMPARATIVES
COMPARATIVES
I. Take note on the grammar explanation below:
She's twice as old as her sister.
He's not as stupid as he looks!
I'm almost as good in maths as in science.
This computer is better than that one.
She's stronger at chess than I am.
It's much colder today than it was yesterday.
I. Take note on the grammar explanation below:
Comparative is the name for the grammar used when comparing two things. The two basic ways to compare are using as .. as or than.
Examples:
Examples:
He's not as stupid as he looks!
I'm almost as good in maths as in science.
This computer is better than that one.
She's stronger at chess than I am.
It's much colder today than it was yesterday.
When comparing with as .. as the adjective does not change. When comparing with than however, some changes are necessary, depending on the number of syllables the adjective has:
A) 1-syllable adjectives: add -er to the adjective
- My sister is much taller than me.
- It's colder today than it was yesterday.
Note: If the word ends: consonant-vowel-consonant, then the last consonant is usually doubled in the comparative. Examples: big-bigger, fat-fatter, hot-hotter.
B) 2-syllable adjectives ending in -y: change the -y to -ier
- She's looking happier today.
- This grammar topic is easier than the last one.
- Why is everyone else luckier than me?
Beware: Do not confuse adjectives and adverbs. 2-syllable adverbs ending in -y must be compared with the word more. Example: I drive more quickly (quicklier) than my brother.
C) Adjectives with 3 or more syllables: use more with the unchanged adjective
- Russian grammar is more difficult than English grammar.
- My sister is much more intelligent than me.
- I find maths lessons more enjoyable than science lessons.

PRACTICE # 14 - ORDERING FOOD AT A RESTAURANT
Ordering food in English at a restaurant is quite common when you travel. There are basic forms and questions, as well as food vocabulary that you can use in places where people speak English. In general, we use the form "I'd like ..." when ordering food in a restaurant. A common question for someone taking an order is "What would you like for ...". Here's a short example:
1. Watch this video and copy the most common expressions when ordering food:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk4GGIx-5tI
2. Copy the dialogue below:
At the Restaurant
Waiter: Good evening madame, welcome to Stanley House, can I help you?
Kim: Can I have a table for one
Waiter: Please come this way.
Ordering food
Waiter: Are you ready to order now?
Kim: Yes, I'd like to have some lunch.
Waiter: Would you like a starter?
Kim: Yes, I'd like a bowl of chicken soup, please.
Waiter: And what would you like for a main course?
Kim: I'd like a grilled cheese sandwich.
Waiter: Would you like anything to drink?
Kim: Yes, I'd like a glass of Coke, please.
Waiter: (After Kim has her lunch) Can I bring you anything else?
Kim: No thank you. Just the bill.
Waiter: Certainly.
Kim: I don't have my glasses. How much is the lunch?
Waiter: That's $6.75.
Kim: Here you are. Thank you very much.
Waiter: You're welcome. Have a good day.
Kim: Thank you, the same to you.

5. Toma el siguiente apunte en tu cuaderno:
El uso de SOME – ANY
En esta lección veremos el uso de SOME y ANY que son dos de las palabras cuantitativas que se utilizan con mayor frecuencia en el idioma inglés. Ambos términos significan alguno, alguna, algunos, algunas y generalmente se utilizan cuando no es necesario establecer de manera exacta cuan grande o pequeña es la cantidad que se expresa.
Se usa SOME acompañando a sustantivos contables e incontables en oraciones afirmativas. Por ejemplo:| There are some letters for you. | Hay algunas cartas para tí. |
| There is some sugar in the pot. | Hay algo de azúcar en el recipiente. |
También se puede utilizar SOME para construír una interrogación donde se espera una respuesta afirmativa, o para preguntar de manera educada si alguien desea algo de tomar o comer, por ejemplo:
| Would you like some tea? | Quieres un té? |
| May I have some more coffee? | Podría tomar algo más de café? |
Se emplea ANY para acompañar sustantivos contables e incontables en preguntas y también en oraciones negativas. Por ejemplo:
| We haven’t got any shirts in your size | No tenemos camisas de tu talla. |
| There aren’t any bottles of milk in the fridge. | No hay botellas de leche en el refrigerador. |
| Have you got any shirts in my size? | Tienen algunas camisas de mi talla? |
| Are there any bottles of milk in the fridge? | Hay botellas de leche en el refrigerador? |
